
Moncton woman heads business group

Sue Calhoun of Moncton was recently elected president of the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs (BPW Canada) at a convention in Winnipeg.
Calhoun, who is owner of Calhoun Research and Development in Moncton, is the 41st national president. She will serve a two-year term.
The mission of BPW Canada is to develop the professional and leadership potential of women in Canada through education, awareness, advocacy and mentoring through a supportive network.
Sackville artist receives research fellowship
Kristy Holmes of Sackville is one of four recipients of a Research Fellowship from the National Gallery of Canada.
Holmes, an art professor at Mount Allison University, will research how Canadian art was being defined and constructed during the late 1960s and early 1970s, with particular reference to four large-scale international exhibitions mounted by the National Gallery of Canada. The research grants from the gallery are valued at approximately $30,000.
Province puts $850,000 into agriculture
The province of New Brunswick recently announced an investment of $850,000 to help the agriculture and agri-food sector become more profitable and sustainable.
Agriculture Minister Rodney Ouellette said the money will go toward producers in the areas of livestock genetic enhancement, honeybee revitalization, apple industry development, export market development and organic industry development.
The agriculture and agri-food industry in New Brunswick accounts for $450 million in farm cash receipts and close to $1.2 billion in agri-food and beverage products, providing direct employment to more than 13,000 in the province.
Drilling firm acquires other business
Landdrill International, a Moncton-based drilling firm, recently acquired the assets of Forages M. Lafreniere, a Quebec-based company, for approximately $5.4 million.
The acquisition gives Landdrill a total of 12 drill rigs for its Canadian operations. The deal also includes support equipment, vehicles, inventory, existing contracts and personnel.
"We are excited to add the experience and expertise of the FML team to the Landdrill family," said Ron Goguen, president of Landdrill. "FML has over 15 years of drilling experience and over this time they have developed a high quality reputation for their services. The addition of their seven drills to our five drills gives us a real presence on the Eastern Canadian mineral drilling market."
